Why I chose to become a coach. Should you too?

I have been thinking……. Before giving you a long winded introduction about the current state of the workforce, the knowledge economy, millennial preferences, side-effects of prosperity, human potential and psychological limitations, let me outline the points I`ll make below. Then, you are free to scroll to whatever might be most interesting to you….. or simply continue reading from here and see where it leads you.

  1. The right questions instead of answers
  2. Coaching infused in modern management
  3. People at the core of it all
  4. My work as Management Consultant
  5. The three essential benefits of coaching

Before I go into detail, quick disclaimer. I hope you will find 1-2 interesting points in this, not necessarily more.  Given there is a natural limit to how exhaustive anyone can be when devoting a few hours to writing something like this, please feel free to add to this piece in the comments. Any points you think I missed and should be shared with others or interesting counter arguments that need to be highlighted etc.

Okay, enough of that..  let’s get to it.

The Experimental Approach || How to stop pondering and start doing

Principal 3

( how to stop pondering and start doing )

I have been thinking …… Let’s quickly start by outlining what I will mean by the word “decisions” and “experiments” in context of this short read. If we don’t, the rest of this might end up making no sense and hence bring no value to you at all.

Decision are irreversible and long-lasting choices. Decisions, for the purpose of this discussion, are choices you made that feel fixed, rigid and in a way like binary “all or nothing” choices. This way of looking at it, is how probably most of us experience the majority of our decisions. Whether that is in the context of business or our life in general.

Radical Ownership vs. Disempowerment

Principal 2

Nothing new here, but an extremely valuable reminder. You know and have probably heard about this very scenario a couple of times. In fact, you probably have experienced exactly this type of scenario yourself at some point. If not, well you just made me extremely jealous of your work environment. Here we go.

There is a meeting/class/appointment scheduled for 10:30am. The other person comes at 11:00am proclaiming “Sorry, the train was 30 min late again”.  I am sure most of you sat there thinking: “NO, it wasn’t the trains fault!! More appropriate would be “Sorry, I didn’t account for the fact that the train might be 30 minutes late again” “This is what you might want to call radical disempowerment. This is when people take themselves completely out of the equation, by assigning themselves no agency whatsoever regarding the outcome.

The importance and difficulty of Authenticity

Principal 1

I have been thinking ….. Authenticity is the degree to which one has formed an understanding of oneself and is passionately sticking to the discovered personality, spirit, or character, despite external pressures.

This does not mean you have to break the current ideals and norms. If it is truly you to work at Wall-street and wear a suit don’t feel pressured to run around in flip-flops and sing Buddhist songs all day instead. The Philosopher Erich From put it roughly this way. “Behavior of any kind, even that wholly in accord with societal standards, guidelines, morals, to be authentic if it results from personal understanding and approval of its drives and origins, rather than merely from conformity with the received wisdom of the society”. What he is basically saying is… MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND and in order to do so you need to sit down and take the time to think & reflect.

Make up your own mind and then take action on it.

The foundation of Tony Robbin’s Success. Learn more from fiction then from non-fiction books

I have been thinking …..   about Tony Robbins and fiction books. Every A-personality is probably guilty of proclaiming at some point in their life that they only read non-fiction books. Many do so due to the perceived benefit or rather lack of benefit of reading a fiction book. Many people still view a fiction book as a mere form of entertainment which is there to be consumed to fall asleep faster. At the same time they view non-fiction books as those that will develop them, improve them as a human being and help them towards successfully climbing the career ladder. If you are that person, then I hope you are willing to lose any mental biases or predisposition for a while and explore with me why fiction can be comparatively more worth your precious time then non-fiction.
